…you have the words of eternal life ! John 6:68
This cry from the heart that Peter utters to Jesus in a moment of discouragement and the desertion of many disciples carries eternal weight and significance! It is an act of absolute trust! Peter acknowledges that even if not everything is clear to him, Jesus remains the only source of true life. Peter shows that he knows to whom he must turn.
Thus, for Peter, staying with Jesus is not just one choice among others, but an existential response to the deep hunger of the human heart, a thirst that nothing and no one else can quench.
These words tell us that only Jesus is the provider of that abundant life He desires for every person, but that we must seize it by our own initiative.
They show us that God, from all eternity, has already traced the path for anyone who desires to live a different life than the one they have lived until now and to enter into the wonderful plan He has prepared for each one of us: to live at His side in never-ending joy !
This is God’s plan of love for anyone who will embrace it by faith — no matter their age, condition, social rank, or personal convictions. Through this affirmation, God shows us through the words of Peter that there is only one way to access this eternal life: Jesus Christ ! He reminds us of this in John 14:6: "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.”
Romans 3:23 tells us that “all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and in chapter 6:23, “…the wages of sin is death; but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
There is no ambiguity in these verses — we are all guilty and condemned; the only way to be forgiven and to enter eternal life is to recognize our sins, ask God for forgiveness, and sincerely desire to turn from them.
He will then transfer us from the kingdom of darkness into His holy light, and we will become children of God ! (1 Peter 2:9)
John the Baptist, who preceded Jesus, spoke of Him: “Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.” (John 1:29) He had earlier called all who came to him in the desert to repentance (Luke 3:8).
John 6:68 also teaches us that the “words of eternal life” are not just words, but the living presence of Jesus who nourishes, restores, and guides. In the areas of our lives where everything seems difficult, to whom or to what do we really turn?
Staying with Jesus is a choice and means accepting to walk sometimes in uncertainty, but with the certainty that His word continues to give life and hope.
Whit conviction, Franz
